 Return of the Banished Dragon

Zephyr stood nervously at the edge of the mountain, looking up. Omni trailed behind him.

"Why we here?" he asked, looking up.

"I lived here a while ago. Just wanted to see if I could come back," Zephyr looked away and his voice trailed off into an awkward silence. Omni took to air eagerly and hovered, waiting for Zephyr.

Zephyr sighed, still very unsure, and followed. He was uneasy as this was one of the only places for Omni and him to find a suitable mentor. He had been banished earlier at the age of 35 when he learned to use spells with movement instead of words. The clan thought he was studing the Shadow arts and quickly ridded of him.

Omni landed lightly on a large platform, slightly breathless at the ruthless winds knocking the air out of him. Zephyr landed more easily and scanned his surroundings. Smudges appeared farther up, but he couldn't be sure of their shape.

He launched back into the air, "C'mon Omni, we've got a long flight ahead."

Omni nodded and propelled his body faster with wind, leaving Zephyr in the dust. Smiling at the silent challenge, Zephyr sped ahead, saluting Omni mockingly. Omni smiled twisted his body around to go faster and was neck and neck with Zephyr.

All of a sudden, Omni crashed into something. The creature shrieked in surprise, and Omni felt its claws (or talons) rake his neck. Paths of crimson flowed down to the cold rock. Omni twirled around, rage building up. His eyes involuntarily flashed red, and he slashed out with his claws into the feathered and furry body of his attacker. Blood clung to his neck and claws, stinging his numb body.

The gryphon circled down to break its fall before nimbly landing. Omni smiled. Suddenly, it took off again, and Omni's smile vanished as quickly as it had come.

Zephyr stood between him and the gryphon, and before they would make contact, bowed his head. The gryphon halted at the familiar behavior and bowed to Zephyr.

"Can you tell me where the clan has gone?" Zephyr asked politely.

The gryphon indicated with its beak, "Left side from where you would stand."

Zephyr turned his head around to face the left side. Fluffy louds were forming, but suddenly got pushed away. Zephyr grinned. He had loved to do the same thing as a youngling.

Zephyr bowed again, "Thank you for your help. I'm sorry my nephew had harmed you."

The gryphon bowed back, "That's fine, but I think I did more damage anyway."

Omni looked down, not exactly pleased with himself. Zephyr tugged him along with encouraging words, "We might find a great mentor for you there."

Zephyr was left in the dust in a matter of seconds. Shaking his head with unused laughter, Zephyr took flight. They arrived at the side of the mountain. The wind passed pleasently under Zephyr's feathers, and he peered down at the gathered dragons. Most of them were staring up at them, uneasy at their presence. Zephyr wondered if any recognized him as the 'banished dragon'.

Zephyr circled before landing on his feet, his wings spread, "May we join you?"

Omni copied him and descended less gracefully.

The dragons as a whole either shrugged or tilted their heads. The oldest looking one inspected their guests, still unsure, "Why have you come here?"

Zephyr indicated behind his shoulder, "My friend, Omni, and I, Zephyr, would like to study further in the Air arts."

The dragon craned his neck and observed Omni, "He looks a little on the dark side, but as long as he coopertive you may stay."

Zephyr's shoulder's relaxed.

Omni's arms ached with the power of his strong opponent. He locked arms and eyes with his mentor. With a strong heave, he dislodged him and tried to send him plummeting down with a gust of air shooting from his mouth.

His teacher stayed on the mountain and hugged the rock submissively even if he still had strength left. Omni grinned at his win. He had been training at the mountain for nearly a month.

Omni dove back to Earth to meet his mentor. They walked back to the 'camp' in silence. He had gotten used to their quiet ways, and knew he had already adapted it.

"So, Zephyr, how long will we get to stay here?" Omni turned to his mentor, who in fact had his own quiet mentor.

Zephyr turned back toward him, "Not much longer. The stars are so confusing, and I can't stand waiting here while others are probably forming rebellious groups. I'd say we should go soon. They're uneasy about your presence already."

They arrived at the camp and settled down for the night. Omni was tired through, and didn't bother trying to stay up to stargaze.

Darkness prevailed his senses. A lithe shadow passed right in front of Omni. He stepped back, a little unsure. Suddenly, it came in contact with his jaw. The punch sent Omni spawling. Grunting in frustration, he regained his posture and aimed a punch with his hand open back with all his force and rage.

"Argh!" A dragon's shriek cut into his ears, and jolted his entire body awake.

An air dragon was clutching its face, where Omni had thrown a ball of dark energy. The leader of the clan faced Zephyr and Omni, his eye turning icy, "You are no longer welcome."

Without looking back, Omni shakily flew as fast as he could away from the mountain, afraid of himself. Zephyr glanced worryingly at him, mystified at Omni's action. They fled to the forests, Omni with a heavy heart, and Zephyr filled with curiousity.
